Dental Sealants

Want to Avoid Tooth Decay and Cavities for You or Your Children?

One of our specialties here at Lowcountry Dental Arts is applying dental sealants to extend the healthy life of your teeth. Dental sealants are a very common preventative dental service to fight against tooth decay, especially cavities. While brushing and flossing your teeth are the primary measures taken against cavities, dental sealants can be an added level of prevention.

What is a Dental Sealant?

Sealants are a thin coating made from plastic or other dental materials that adheres to the tops of your back teeth. The process for putting on a dental sealant is painless and completed in a timely manner. Sealants tend to last for several years before they need to be replaced. Research shows that sealants have reduced the risk of decay in molars by about 80 percent.

Who Should Get Dental Sealants?

Children or adults can benefit from dental sealants. However, the earlier on in life you get them put on, the more benefit you will see. Children usually have their first molars come in around the age of 6, and their second set around the age of 12. Putting a dental sealant on these teeth right away can help prevent cavities in the long run. Talk to your dentist about whether they think Dental sealants are right for you or your family.
